A very cute Hong Kong resident

Cute Squirrel!

I was able to get several good close-up photographs before he/she got nervous and ran away to the next tree over. This is one of the better ones. Is he cute or what?

For a 340x510 version, click here.

A couple of weeks ago before coming to L.A. while completing some chores in and around Causeway Bay, I was waiting in my car at a red traffic light when I suddenly saw something in the trees ahead of me. I immediately backed my car into the striped stopping zone behind me, picked up my camera and raced over to the trees.

In the 19 years that I've lived in Hong Kong, I've only seen these cute animals once, for just one glancing second in a tree near a friend's home in Repulse Bay. That was when I first realised that we have squirrels in Hong Kong. We don't have squirrels in Australia; we have wonderful possums but no squirrels; so getting the chance to photograph one in Hong Kong was a big thing for me.

I should have used a higher ASA speed but the photos turned out ok anyway.

I have been living in Hong Kong for 20 years and I never know we have squirrel! I always miss the days when I was travelling in North America where squirrels were all over the place.

There are quite a few squirrels in the University of Hong Kong. I have even seen "tree frogs" there (a kind of miniature frogs that seems to be found only in HK).

    Hi Greg,

I just ran into your site today. Its very awesome that your sharing so much with us and replying. Its very great to know that there is someone out there to listen and to take time to reply. I myself wanted to become an actor but is very fearful of going about it. After reading your site it gives me bigger picture of an actors job and understanding.

Thank You Mucho! By the way are you on Myspace.com

New here?"

Cute!!! It's like the squirrels I see in Michigan!!! : ) I have never seen them in Hong Kong though...

By the way... have you counted how many times you've been Mr. Robinson in TVB programs (since you're Mr. Robinson again for the current series)...

    Dear Kwok Wing,

I am a doctor in psychiatry currently receiving training in London. I googled 'depression in Hong Kong' and found your article.

It is courageous for you to admit suffering from depression in the past. Actually there are so many people in Hong Kong having emotional problem and not aware that there can be treatment. Even if they see a doctor, treatment is usually given in the form of medication. I notice there is a lack of the availability of psychotherapy in Hong Kong.

That was a reason why I left Hong Kong to continue training in UK. I gained experience in different psychological treatment, like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy, and Eye Movement Desentisation and Reprocessing etc (may google them). Also in England, I am having a chance to really LISTEN and talk to the patients, unlike having about 5 minutes in the outpatient clinics in Hong Kong.

Would you share with us how you recovered from the illlness? What did you find useful to lift your mood? How do you see your life during and after depression? What is the meaning of suffering from depression to you? What advice would you give to other people suffering from depression?

It may encourage other people to combat against mental health problem. And I can recommend some patients to read your suggestions.

    Best wishes

    Hi Grey,
I loves these little guys(squirrels). They're so cute! They're all over the place in North America. Especially Spring and Summer. I always have some almonds in my purse. Every time when I see them. I feed them an almonds. They're very shy. They always wait until you walk away then they go get the nuts. It's fun to watching them.

I was pretty excited when I discovered this blog, I've had a bit of a crush on you since I was 8 or 9 or something. (25 now) But anyway...

I'm in the UK so we have quite a lot of squirrels although, sadly, I don't see so many red squirrels. You've taken a lovely shot, I'm pretty jealous, squirrels never sit still long enough for me to take a decent photo. Maybe I just need to train up my reflexes.

This is my sorry attempt at a squirrel photo.

Here's a lovely squirrel photo from another Flickr member.

Just a quick note, you seem to really like photography. Might I be so bold as to recommend the services of Flickr ?

From all the sites I've seen, so far it's been the best way to store, sort, share and browse photos online. It's definitely better when you have friends and family with flickr accounts too. I'm slowly working my way through my family, recommending/demanding them to use flickr.

I really like the fact that you can see your friends and family's last uploaded photos as soon as you log in, and the fact that you can add notes to selected areas of your photos.

Uhm, I assure you that I'm not affiliated with flickr, except that I have my own photos on there.

As an extra note, I really like the design of your site, it's clean, effective, and the simplicity belies the fact that you gave a lot of thought to how the text would look on screen and how easy it is to read. If there are any niggling points for me, it would be the blue-on-grey with links inside your photo captions. There isn't enough contrast between those colours so it's pretty difficult to read, even if it just says "here". Other than that, nice job.

Love the squirrel shots; I'm a native here in HK but I never seen even one of them. I noticed many nice-looking migratory birds flying near my window at home or in parks; I noticed real nice butterflies and moths and even the pigeons and doves. First time I hear about squirrels; thanks for telling me we have them too, so-o-o-o proud... . Oh by the way, there's a song called 21st century schizoid man, don't be bothered by the label; you're a 100-dollar note; you still are one no matter how crumpled you are. And I am a 10-dollar note, he-he-he...

A nice and cute shot. It is really hard to find squirrels in Hong Kong nowadays.

You really have great eyes in photography.

    Hi Grey,

I was searching 'depression' online and found your page. Honestly, I never pay much attention on you even though I have been watching you on TV dramas or movies for so many years. I just think you are a western who can act and speak very good cantonese! That's it!
However, I am very impressed after reading your articles and the story behind your acting life! I can feel your positive energy and sincerity, trying your very best to strive for your own success. You are such an artistic person with great talent on arts, music and language. Amazing!
BTW, expressing yourself here on your own website is the best way to connect yourself with your beloved frineds/ fans and let them understand you more! Great job! Your uploaded songs are so nice! I shall put it on my online blog as background music.
And now, I also become one of your supporter! xoxoxoxo.....I admire your enthusiasm and determination really! Work hard! Turn your dream into reality! I must buy your CD when it is done!^____^

Hope to do more sharing on life with you in the future! Drop me a line or send me e-mail if you are free!
