A Scottish Christmas

Filed in TravelTags: , , ,

With only eight days remaining before Christmas, I thought I'd better write this now before it's too late.

My wife and I are going to visit friends in Dundee, Scotland for Christmas. We'll be in Dundee from December 26 to 30, and then in London from December 30 to January 1, 2006. Yep. We'll be in London for the new year.

I think it'll be great. Our only concern is what to do in Dundee when the sun's down. According to AccuWeather, sunrise in Dundee is currently around 8.45am and the sun sets again before 4pm. That's a lot of dark time and you can only drink so much coffee in one day.

In any case, I wondered if anybody reading my blog from London or Scotland would like to meet up. It will be my first trip to Scotland and England and I might not be going again for a long time. I'm thinking that meeting in a coffee shop would be nice. If anyone would like to meet up, please leave a comment and we'll discuss it.

8 days remaining. Well, actually more if you add on our plane and bus time, but you get the idea. I hope it snows.

(Got to go. My am730 column is way overdue and I'm still not sure what to write about.)

Mr. Rivers, I can see your Chinese is very good through your writings and performances. I have been spending time on finding a way to learn English more effectively. Could you share your experience of learning Chinese with us?

Incidentally, my school NET teacher is also an Australian!

i think there are a couple of tvb fans living in London from reading other TVB blogs. It would be nice if we could all meet up for a coffee. I live in London.

Anyway, I really appreciate you and your ternacity in picking up the language. If it weren't for people like you that serve as role models to beginners as I once was, a lot of us, might not have pulled through. Thanks for sharing your everyday experiences with us. 好可惜我人喺溫哥華冇機會同你坐低飲啖咖啡傾下偈。Anyway, have a safe trip and a Merry Christmas.

Ricky (I remember you ;-) and Elly,

we'd like to have dinner somewhere, somewhere not expensive. if the people who'd like to meet with us could arrange it, that'd be great. you could discuss it here or somewhere else but let us know the final decision. either Dec 30 or Dec 31. either night would be fine although I think most people would already have plans for Dec 31.

Rowan, I'll have to write about my Cantonese experience because many people have asked.

Michael, thank you for your complements but judging from your Chinese, I think you've already well and truly surpassed me. if I ever visit Canada, I'll make a note of it here ;-)

    hi greg

i'll talk to carmen and try to find a cheap place. i hope i can get my cantonese like michaels (michael, can you tell me what books you used?)

  7. 河國榮 says:

Ricky, I'm hoping to see everybody (you, Carmen, Elly, anybody else interested) at the same dinner/gathering. if you think of a place, write it here and we'll see if other people know of it too.

Working late on the 30th dec so can only make it for dinner on the 31 st. No worries as I can appreciate the others may be busy on the 31st. Would suggest meeting up in Chinatown as the tube(MTR) station is nearby and the restaurant prices are pretty standard.

  9. Peter says:

    Dear Gregory

We haven't met before, but if you visit Edinburgh for a day, I'd love to meet up for coffee.

    Peter in Scotland

  10. 河國榮 says:

    hi guys.

I'm typing this from my friend's home in Scotland.

we'll be in Edinburgh on Thursday. if you'd like to meet up (Peter), please leave a note.

we'll be in London by late Friday afternoon. Ricky and anybody else interested, please confirm by message. I'll check the website again at least once before we leave on Friday and probably again when we reach the hotel in London.

  11. Peter says:

    Hi Greg

I think the best place to meet would be somewhere in Princes Street in the city centre. I suggest meeting at the Scots Monument at the east end of Princes Street. It's on the main road, but the entrance is in Princes Street Gardens. It's a well known landmark so it shouldn't be too hard to find. Unless of course you have any ideas... really, whatever is easiest for you.

  12. Peter says:

    Hi Greg

Or alternatively, I could name a coffee shop and we could meet up inside. Again, whatever is most convenient for you.

  13. 河國榮 says:

    hi Peter.

3.00pm at the coffee shop of your choosing, and give me the address please.

  14. Peter says:

    Hi Greg

Lets meet at Costa Coffee at 76 Princes Street. It's on the corner of Princess Street/Hanover Street.

  15. Aiwah says:

Shame I can't meet up with you all as I am half way between Edinburgh and London.... (ie Manchester). Give me a wave on the way down and hope you enjoy your stay in Britain! Did you manage to catch the snow? There was plenty of it over the weekend!

  16. 河國榮 says:

I met up with Peter today in Edinburgh. it was great.

    Ricky and Elly,

could we meet up on the afternoon of 31st? or lunch? please advise.

  17. Kayin says:

    *Waves frantically*

    I'm back!

Wow, I haven't been here in a long time. Ah, lucky! You get to go somewhere for New Year's. I'm just kinda stuck in Sydney. But I'm visiting the Gold Coast up in Queensland mid-January, so I guess that's good enough anyways. It's just that I'll be going with my cousin, and I'm not really that close with any of my cousins, so ...

Anyways, I hope you have/are having fun and meeting up with a lot of fans! Is it snowing?

Oh yeah, just a question ... is anyone here subscribed to this blog? Because I never get any e-mails, and it's not that Greg hasn't been updating.

    hi greg and elly
really sorry but i can't make it as i have just received bad news about my grandad, he is very sick and in hospital so i am very sorry but am unable to come. china town is a good place to elly wong gei restaurant is ok service is a bit rude but food is good but also a better place is 大家樂飯店 service is ok and food is good. hope that you both have a great time and happy new year
    sorry once again

  20. ellypiggy says:

    Hi Greg and Ricky

Ricky so sorry to hear about your grandad.
Greg,I wonder if we could meet for dinner tomorrow (31st)in chinatown instead of lunch. The problem with lunch is that there maybe a chance that i maybe late or have to leave early as I am on call.Work is pretty unpredictable during the daytime. However, usually by the evening it is quiet.Where are you living?,I thought by the off chance you live near me (north london), then we can eat locally.I was thinking 730 pm in the leicester square tube station by the HSBC ATM cash machine or outside the WONG KEI restaurant? Don't worry if you can't make it.I will e-mail you my mobile number so that we can SMS text each other if required. I will keep checking your blog for updates.

  21. Wing Liu says:

What a SHAME? I live in Northampton, which is ONLY 1 hour away from LONDON. Love to meet you. We love your acting @ TVB (we watch via satelite)! My son (4.5 yrs old) think you are so funny - a kwai-lo who speaks Cantonese but with a Western FACE!? I am back in HK in March for the Sheung Shui Wai "DA CHIU" festival - every 60 YRS!!! Maybe I can invite you to our village for the BIG FESTIVAL (I think it is going to be bigger than Cheung Chau's Bun Festival - I am sure the village chief will approved of your visit???

Hi ya, I just discovered your blog! just wanna say, I was on the same flight with you (Virgin Atlantic) on Xmas day!!

I was quite shocked when i saw you at the airport, then i thought maybe you're going somewhere else, didnt expect you'll be on the same flight even if you're going to London too.Coz there's so many flights departing hk pretty much same time.

More shockingly, you're sitting 2 rolls in front of me! lol...

Sorry for my knowledge, I had no idea where're you originally from. I thought oh you're heading to England for vacation or something, thought you're from England! my bad..

Would love to come and say hello on the flight, but i was worried i'll be distracting your privacy with your wife.

Anyways, it's nice to be on the same flight with you on Xmas Day. Made my Xmas day more special and not as 'boring'.
